Questions

Everything people ask before they book

How does the estimate work, and what does it include?

The visit takes about 45 minutes. You then get a written work order: each line with its price, the allowances for things you choose (cabinets, counters, tile), what is not included, the schedule and the payment steps. There is no charge for the visit or the work order; it covers measuring, a layout drawing and the written lines, and it does not cover permit drawings or an engineer's letter.

What changes the price?

The size of the room, the cabinets and counters you pick, whether the layout moves, what's behind the walls, the age of the house and the permits. The three rungs above are examples; your work order prices your room.

Is my house built before 1978? What do you do about lead?

Paint from before 1978 may contain lead. The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule says a certified firm must follow set work practices whenever paid work disturbs it, and you get the EPA's renovation pamphlet before we start. We treat old paint as lead paint unless a test says otherwise, seal off the work area, never dry-scrape or burn paint, and clean with HEPA vacuums and wet wipes. Jobs under 6 square feet inside or 20 square feet outside are exempt; window replacement and demolition never are. Our certification is on the Insurance and warranty page.

Do I need a permit, and who pulls it?

A Refresh usually doesn't need one. Moving a wall, plumbing, gas or wiring does. We pull the permit through the City of Columbus Building and Zoning Services or your own city or township, and the fee goes on the work order at cost.

What happens if you find something behind the wall?

We stop, show you, and put the fix and its price in writing before we go on. Nothing is added to the job without your signature.

Can I live in the house during the work?

Yes. In a Refresh you keep a working kitchen most days. In a Rebuild you won't, and we set up a sink and a place to plug in a microwave before the demolition.

How do deposits and payments work?

A deposit when you sign, payments at set steps in the work, and a last payment after the walkthrough. The schedule is on the work order, and we go through it before you sign.

Who will be in my home?

Myron, our project lead, is on site every working day. Lacey, Sumit and Vince come for their parts, and you'll know the day before who's coming.

What does the warranty cover?

Our workmanship is warranted for one year after the walkthrough. Cabinets, counters, fixtures and appliances carry their makers' warranties. Terms, limits and exclusions are in the written warranty.

What don't you do?

We don't build additions or new houses, replace roofs or take whole-house remodels. We don't take jobs outside the area or ones we can't price from a visit.

Do you offer financing?

Not through us. If you use a loan or a home equity line, we'll give you the work order for your lender.

Can I choose my own materials?

Yes. Anything you buy yourself is off the work order, but we check that it will fit before you do.

Not on the list?

Text us the question, along with a photo of the room.
