Lighting
Planned with the layout, not after
Where the cabinets go decides where the lights go. We draw them together, so the wiring is behind the walls before anything is closed.
A kitchen needs three kinds of light: for the room, for the counter and for the table. We price each as its own line.
What a lighting plan includes
A lighting plan drawn with the cabinet layout
Recessed lights, pendants and under-cabinet LEDs
Dimmers on the circuits where you'll want them
A licensed electrician for any new wiring

The price
What moves the price
Fixtures are the small part. The wiring is the rest.
New wiring
Adding a circuit or moving a switch means opening walls.
Recessed lights
Each one is a hole, a box and a run of wire, so the count matters.
Pendants
A pendant over an island needs a box in the ceiling and a plan for where it hangs.
Under cabinet
Hardwired lighting is cleaner, and costs more than plug-in strips.
Dimmers and controls
Each switch and dimmer is its own line.
Code updates
Outlets and circuits in a remodeled kitchen are brought to current code.
The schedule
How lighting goes
It's done in two passes, with the walls open and again at the end.
- 01Before the order
Step 1: Plan
Lights drawn on the layout, with switches and dimmers marked.
- 02Start
Step 2: Rough-in
Wiring run and boxes set while the walls are open.
- 03Middle
Step 3: Inspection
The electrician's work is inspected before the walls are closed.
- 04End
Step 4: Fixtures
Pendants, recessed trims and under-cabinet lights go on last.
Permits
Who pulls the permit
New wiring needs a permit, and a licensed electrician pulls it and signs for their work. Swapping a fixture for a fixture usually doesn't.
Questions
Lighting questions
Can you add lights without opening the ceiling?
Sometimes, with surface-mounted fixtures. Recessed lights need access above.
Do you supply the fixtures?
We can, or you can. Fixtures you buy yourself come off the work order, and we check that they fit.
What about smart switches?
They're a line on the work order. We'll tell you what they need in the wall.
Is under-cabinet lighting hardwired?
It can be. We run the wire when the walls are open and decide with you where the switch goes.
Ready to plan the lights?
Text a photo of the room, or ask for a visit.
