Tub to shower

A shower where the tub was

The tub and its surround come out, and a low-step shower goes in on the same footprint. It's the smallest bathroom job that changes how you use the room.

Most conversions keep the layout. A new base, a new valve and new walls are the bulk of the work.

What a conversion includes

  • Tub, surround and old valve out

  • A new low-step base, drain and waterproofing

  • Tile or solid-surface walls, with a niche

  • Blocking in the walls for grab bars, even if you don't want them yet

The price

What moves the price of a conversion

The footprint is fixed, so the walls and the glass decide it.

  • Wall material

Solid-surface panels go up in a day. Tile takes days, and costs more.

  • Glass or curtain

A frameless door is measured after the tile is up, and adds a week.

  • Base height

A low step needs the floor opened and the drain lowered.

  • Seat, niche, handheld

Each is a small line, and each is easier to add now than later.

  • The surprise under the tub

Old tubs hide soft subfloor and old drains.

  • Access

A second-floor bath with narrow stairs takes longer to empty and to stock.

The schedule

How a conversion goes

On site it's short. The wait is for glass.

Base, valve, tile and glass are ordered at signing.

  2. 02

New base and valve, waterproofing, then walls.

  4. 04
    After the glass

Permits

Permits for a conversion

Moving the drain or the valve usually needs a plumbing permit. We check with your city or township at the visit, and a licensed plumber signs for their part.

Questions

Conversion questions

Will I still have a tub anywhere?

If this is your only tub and you may sell, tell us. We'll talk through what that changes before you decide.

How long until I can shower again?

A few days after the tile is grouted, and sooner with solid-surface walls. We tell you the day when the work order is signed.

Can the shower have a seat?

Yes. A built-in bench or a fold-down seat is a line on the work order, and the blocking for it goes in either way.

Is a conversion cheaper than a full bath?

Usually, because the vanity, toilet and floor stay. It depends on the walls you choose.

Ready to swap the tub?

Text a photo of the bathroom, or ask for a visit.
